Tourmaline – The October Birthstone

If you were born in October, then you are fortunate enough to have such a stunning and versatile gemstone as your birthstone. I am talking about Tourmaline

What is the Birthstone

While Opal and Tourmaline are both October Birthstones we will be focussing primarily on Tourmaline.

The name Tourmaline comes from the Sinhales word tormalli, which means “stone with mixed colors”.  Which is pretty spot on considering, Tourmaline is known for its vast variety of colors.  The range of colors start with, Savannah Tourmaline (yellow to orange hue), Paraiba Tourmaline (violet/blue to green/blue hue), Rubellite Tourmaline (pink/red to purple/red hue), and Chrome Tourmaline (strong green hue). Although Pink Tourmaline (Rubellite Tourmaline) is the preferred choice among most October babies.

Now that you got a bit of information into October’s Birthstones, let’s dive into a few more details.

History of Tourmaline

Tourmaline became known as an ‘American Gem’ in the late 1800’s due to gemologist George F. Kunz. It is believed that Tourmaline promotes self-confidence and diminishes fear. Additionally, Tourmaline is not only the October Birthstone but also the gemstone that celebrates the 8th wedding anniversary. You can locate Tourmaline mines in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Sri lanka, the United States, ect.

Why a Tourmaline is a Good Investment

Tourmaline is fairly durable, ranking 7.5 out of 10 on the Mohs scale. Compared to an Opal who ranks 5 or below on the scale, making Tourmaline a great choice for everyday wear. Since, Tourmaline has such a huge range of colors it can be easy to pair it with any precious metals and designs.
