Diamond Education: The Pear Cut Diamond
This brilliant-cut diamond is also called a teardrop for its single point and
rounded end. The unique look of the pear shape helps make it a popular choice
for a variety of diamond jewelry. The diamond usually contains 58 facets,
allowing for light to pass through it much the same way as in a Round, but makes
more of an impression because of its much less common shape.
Polish and symmetry are two important aspects of the cut. The polish grade
describes the smoothness of the diamond's facets, and the symmetry grade refers
to alignment of the facets. With poor polish, the surface of a facet can be
dulled, and may create blurred or dulled sparkle. It may constantly look like it
needs to be cleaned. With poor symmetry, light can be misdirected as it enters
and exits the diamond.
