Diamond Education: The Cushion or Cut Diamond
This beautiful diamond cut has been around for more than a hundred years. The
cushion cut has also been referred to as the pillow-cut. A cross between the Old
Mine Cut, which was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a
modern Oval-Cut Diamond. The Old Mine Cut featured large facets and rounded
corners, since the cutting was all done by hand at the time. They were designed
to catch the beauty of candlelight. The Cushion-Cut Diamond contains 58 facets.
Polish and symmetry are two important aspects of the cut. The polish grade
describes the smoothness of the diamond's facets, and the symmetry grade refers
to alignment of the facets. With poor polish, the surface of a facet can be
dulled, and may create blurred or dulled sparkle. It may constantly look like it
needs to be cleaned. With poor symmetry, light can be misdirected as it enters
and exits the diamond.
